Panama: an entire country that deserves a description nothing less than unique and breathtaking. Not only does it fill this description by the people, topography, culture, and eco system, but its also home to a world marvel. What is this marvel that captures the curiosity of people around the world? It would be nothing other than the Panama Canal itself. A body of water composed of lakes and an ingenious lock system that allows cargo ships to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans by going over the whole country saving the shipping companies from going around South America. This structure has allowed the transportation of goods to be faster and cheaper for the last 100 years as they simply sailed right over Panama. On our last day of the journey we had the privilege of traveling though part of the Canal on a smaller boat while being served lunch. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that will stick with me for many years to come. During the voyage we learned just how important and yet simple this massive structure is. For one ship to travel though the Canal it can take a few days and up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, but if the ship decided to travel around South America it would take weeks longer and cost a million dollars in fuel alone! The canal is simply a manmade lake that ships can travel on; however, the lake has an elevation over 80 feet above the seas level. So, 2 locks had to be implemented in order to raise and lower the ships. The locks operate off of gravity power to move water and large metal gates opened and closed by small 25 horse power motors. This means the canal has a low effect on the environment and serves as a very curtail structure for moving agriculture related products more efficiently. Overall this was a life changing trip that allowed me to apply all my studies in college, and participate in experiences that will benefit me for years to come.
