This past spring semester, I completed a study abroad semester in Italy learning about marketing and the fashion industry. I spent four months living in Florence, Italy and traveling throughout Europe. I learned so much about Italian culture, cuisine, and fashion. One of my goals when studying abroad was to focus on growing as an individual as well. By this I mean, I wanted to learn to be comfortable with myself when I am not in my comfort zone and how to openly embrace change and different circumstances. By studying abroad in Florence, I succeeded in learning more about the world and about myself.

The list of countries I traveled to while living in Europe includes: Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, France, Hungary, England, Ireland, Poland, Germany, Vatican City, Sweden, Denmark, and The Netherlands. I traveled with new friends, family, and by myself. Each country held their own customs, history, and culture, yet they all held a similar overarching feeling. I believe this was the case due to their proximity in borders and frequent travel of citizens within the European Union. I would not change having experienced any of these countries for anything.

After coming home, I am frequently asked which country was my favorite. I am, of course, partial to Italy. This beautiful country was my home for months while I was attempting to navigate life outside of the United States. The Italian people hold such a beautiful grasp on life. They highly value quality, whether that be from food, wine, fashion, art, or time with loved ones. For example, it was common to see nonne, Italian grandmothers, attending the farmers markets every morning in the neighborhood centers to obtain the freshest ingredients or to see every Italian on the cobblestone streets dressed in a refined and elegant manner. By embracing their culture during my time abroad, it reminded me of the simple fact that we should each put effort into the everyday pleasures so we can enjoy life fuller. By spending an extra fifteen minutes prepping dinner or getting ready in the morning, we can enjoy that day to a fuller extent. It is the little things like tasting something delicious, wearing something that makes you confident, or taking in a beautiful piece of artwork that add depth and enjoyment to our daily routines. Before my time in Florence, I was solely focused on efficiency and convenience. Now, I take my time to enjoy the simple joys life has to offer. By taking an active part in a culture that was not my own, I learned to embrace different parts of life that will have a lasting impact on me. I will forever be grateful for my time spent here.
